The Artisans Behind the Craft

Dedicated creators focused on handmade excellence

Our Story

Plixernokhiphlox began in 2019 when Sienna Kowalski, Lachlan O'Brien, and Freya Chen met at a Sydney Craft Week exhibition. Each brought distinct skills—Sienna's RMIT ceramics training, Lachlan's third-generation Tasmanian leatherworking heritage, and Freya's aromatherapy background. They shared a vision: preserve traditional craftsmanship while creating sustainable, contemporary Australian gifts.

The Pigeonhole studio in Darlinghurst became available in early 2020. What started as a shared workspace evolved into a collaborative practice where their disciplines intersect. Freya's candles sit in Sienna's vessels. Lachlan's leather wraps protect Sienna's ceramics during shipping. This integration defines our approach.

What Drives Us

Craftsmanship

We honor traditional techniques—wheel-throwing, saddle-stitching, hand-pouring—while embracing contemporary design sensibilities and Australian materials.

Sustainability

Environmental responsibility guides our material choices. We source locally, minimize waste, and choose biodegradable or recyclable packaging.

Community

We support Byron Bay apiaries, Adelaide tanneries, and Southern Highlands clay suppliers, building networks of ethical producers.

Quality

Every item undergoes rigorous inspection. Sienna checks glaze integrity, Lachlan tests stitch tension, Freya verifies burn quality.

Inside Our Workshop

Our Darlinghurst studio occupies 800 square feet in the heritage Pigeonhole building. Sienna's Shimpo wheel sits near north-facing windows. Lachlan's stitching bench holds vintage tools inherited from his grandfather. Freya's pouring station features temperature-controlled melters and a scent library of 40+ native botanicals.

We maintain small-batch production—typically 20-30 pieces per week. This pace allows quality control and accommodates custom requests. Visitors often comment on the studio's quietness; we work without background music, focusing entirely on the tactile feedback of materials.
